Group 1 Horse Races
Group 1 horse races are the top grade of thoroughbred horse racing in Australia. There are just over 60 Group 1 horse races held each season in Australia, the most popular being the Melbourne Cup. The Pattern Committee of the Australian Racing Board recommends which races shall be designated as Group and Listed races for the racing season. Group 1 horse races offer a minimum of $300,000 in prize money but the majority of Australian Group 1 races offer over $1 million in prize money. All of the Group 1 horse races are held during racing carnivals. There are 9 horse racing carnivals held each year, the most popular being the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Victorian Derby
The Victorian Derby is a Group 1 horse race for three year olds held under set weight conditions and is run over 2500m. The Victorian Derby is held at Flemington racecourse on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The Victorian Derby offers $1.5 million and has been run since 1855.

The Everest is run over 1200m at weight for age conditions. With prize money of $13 million, the Everest is the richest race in Australia and is the feature of the Sydney Spring Carnival. The Everest was first run in 2017 and offers slots for owners to buy for entry into the race.

Sydney Cup
The Sydney Cup is a Group 1 horse race for three year old horses and older run over 3200m. The Sydney Cup is run at Randwick racecourse in autumn during the ATC Championships series. One of the oldest horse races in Australia, The Sydney Cup offers $2 million in prize money and has been run since 1862 under handicap conditions.

Horse racing carnivals host the biggest horse races in Australia each year. Each state offers horse racing carnivals, with some states offering multiple racing carnivals each season. The Magic Millions Racing Carnival kicks of the year of racing. Then followed by the Melbourne Festival of Racing. The Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival is the final race carnival of summer.
The Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival hosts some of the biggest Group 1 races in Australia, including The Everest. The most popular carnival is the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival which hosts a number of Group 1 races which includes The Melbourne Cup.
